Culver Seeks to Boost Pressure on Environment, Taxes

By Becky Ogann

DES MOINES (AP) - Liberal church activists are calling for lawmakers to support Governor Culver's proposed changes to the state's corporate income tax law.

At a Statehouse news conference on Thursday, they urged lawmakers to close what Culver sees as a loophole that lets out-of-state companies report income from Iowa operations in other states that have lower tax rates.

Culver estimates that changing the law would bring in $75 million a year.

Chris Rehmann is with the Mid-Iowa Organizing Strategy, a coalition of church activists. He says closing the loophole will ``level the playing field for Main Street businesses.''

Culver's proposal has been declared dead by fellow Democrats who run the Legislature. His bottle proposal is also stalled.
