Hillary Clinton Tries "Warmer Approach"By Josh Hinkle, Reporter
INDEPENDENCE - According to the latest polls she's trailing democrat Barack Obama in Iowa. Now Hillary Clinton's revealing a softer side of her campaign, just a few weeks before the caucuses.
An Iowa fog grounded Hillary Clinton's chopper and kept the Independence crowd waiting for more than an hour. But the delay offered the senator an opportunity to try out her new, so-called warmer approach. "We headed out to the airport to come here this morning and found out the fog wouldn't let us land, so we drove and we might have broken a few speed limits, but don't tell anybody," said Clinton. This more subdued stump speech, with glimpses into the personal side of this politician, came after a series of missteps in Iowa. Analysts say she's trying to overcome the latest damage - going negative on her chief rival, Barack Obama. "Is it hard to get past those things and focus on what you want to do?" asked TV9’s Josh Hinkle. "A lot of people make up their minds at the end and more and more people are coming and saying they want to support me and that is very exciting," said Clinton. Clinton has lost momentum in Iowa polls. Undecided voters we spoke with say her attacks damaged the chance to grab many new supporters. Her campaign's latest push to visit all 99 counties could be a way to make up for lost time. But does it come too late? With just two weeks to go, her campaign stops in Iowa are far fewer than Obama or John Edwards. And some voters wonder whether she and the other candidates will forget about Iowa after the caucuses. "Are we going to see any kind of absence for a while?” asked TV9. "Well, of course the other states are going to have to get some attention. We have a quick turnaround to get to New Hampshire and a mad dash to the states on February 5th and more states that are spread out," said Clinton. Clinton doesn't seem to be worried about the caucuses though, especially after the Des Moines Register's endorsement this week. And she says she'll come back to Iowa eventually. Her new, more up close and personal campaign has friends and family offering testimonials to crowds. They range from her own mother, all the way to her best friend in elementary school.
