Iowa State Fair Booth Draws Attention to Missing Girls
DES MOINES, Iowa - Thursday marked the start of the 2012 Iowa State Fair, it also marked day 28 since the disappearance of 9-year-old Elizabeth Collins and 10-year-old Lyric Cook. Investigators believe someone kidnapped the girls from Evansdale on July 13th. A new effort at the Iowa State Fair will help get nearly one million people to see the faces of two little girls in hopes of getting a tip that might bring the girls home.
Posters and pictures of the girls line a stand at the State Fair along with details of the girls' disappearance. The Division of Criminal Investigations has released no new information on the case.
Investigators say it is frustrating going into the fourth week with very little new information in the search for Lyric Cook and Elizabeth Collins. With nearly one million people expected to visit the fair, investigators thought the stand will help bring more exposure to the case. "This is one of the things we talked about doing several weeks ago in the event that we didn't have some sort of clue or lead in this particular case," said D.C.I. Assistant Director Charis Paulson. Investigators are hoping that maybe a fair-goer might see the girls' faces and possibly help solve the case.
This is not the first time D.C.I. has plastered the faces of missing persons across their booth. "This is a great venue because there are so many people who come here not just from Iowa but outside of Iowa," Paulson said. "We just don't have anyone coming forward with a good place to look or a great lead for us to go on so it's really frustrating."
The D.C.I. received at least one tip Thursday at booth. Agents will follow up on the possible lead. Paulson said she is encouraged by how many people have taken time from the food and festivities to look at the faces of the two missing girls.
