EVANSDALE, Iowa - Wednesday marks day six in the disappearance case of two Eastern Iowa girls. Lyric Cook, 10, and her cousin Elizabeth Collins, 8, went missing on Friday. Their bikes were found at Meyers Lake.

As the days roll by, the girls’ families are hoping for some kind of clue as to where their daughters went.

“I’m scared, I’m concerned for them. But I’m still trusting in god and will until the day that I die and pray they will return home,” said Lyric’s Mother Misty Morrissey.

Authorities decided to start draining Meyers Lake on Monday. Many are watching and waiting as the process continues throughout the week. Investigators are hoping to rule out the possibility that the girls are at the bottom. Many people who live in the community are spending time at the lake and watching it go down, but it can’t go fast enough.

“Slow, very slow,” said Evansdale Resident April Martin.

April Martin and Jeremy Towsley sat on a bench near the lake for about eight hours overnight. They finally went home at around 7:00 Wednesday morning.

“We’ve been out here since 11:00 last night,” Martin said.

“We got high hopes, hoping they are not here in the lake and that they’re somewhere safe,” said Waterloo Resident Jeremy Towsley.

Others who stopped by said they were restless. Many people within the Evansdale community are having problems getting to bed.

“Sleepless nights, I haven’t been able to sleep more than a few hours a night,” said Former Evansdale firefighter Billy Fischels.

Instead of the nightmares that await them when they hit the pillow, they know they’re living their own nightmare right here in the small community.

“If anything once the lake is drained completely, I just hope it gives some sort of an ease to people,” said Evansdale Billy Fischels.

Family members, however, aren’t turning to the lake for any explanations. They still believe someone abducted the children. According to Morrissey, there are no likely suspects.

“There’s not anyone that I’m considering that I know could have done this or that my family knows but we, as well, have turned to that line of thinking. Just because we have searched for so many days through such a large area, Waterloo, the Evansdale area and haven’t found anything,” Morrissey said.

Investigators are continuing the search and ask anyone with any ideas on what could have happened to the girls to call the police at 319-232-6682.
