DES MOINES, Iowa - Around 100 people attended the vigil in Des Moines on Saturday night, and while most of them do not know Lyric Cook or Elizabeth Collins, they still felt a strong connection to the two Iowa girls and their families.

The crowd lit candles, sang songs and sent lanterns into the sky to symbolize that the memory of the girls will live on.

“Two innocent kids, girls, go missing in a small town (in) Iowa. It just tears at your heart,” said Eugenia Jamieson, who grew up near Evansdale.

“It hits too close to home. We all have children and we allow our kids to go outside and play, and you can’t trust everybody,” said vigil organizer Nicole Lowry.

“We just sing and we give grace, and we just wish that this didn’t happen,” said Lowry’s daughter, Hope Lowry. “(I) feel sorry for those little girls because they didn’t do anything wrong.”

“We’re so far away from Evansdale, but yet, the support feels like Evansdale is right next door,” said Jamieson. “I don’t understand what they’re going through, but I want them to know that we care.”

Meanwhile, the Cedar Valley Crime Stoppers are still accepting donations from the public. Organizers said the money goes to a reward fund, offered to anyone who can provide information leading to an arrest in the case.

Contributions can be mailed to Crime Stoppers, in care of Elizabeth Collins and Lyric Cook, at P.O. Box 1510, Waterloo, Iowa, 50704.

Donations will be accepted until Dec. 21.
