Wednesday 10PM Update: As Search for Missing Girls Continues, Petition Surfaces About Area Security

EVANSDALE, Iowa - Black Hawk County law enforcement expect Meyers Lake to be empty sometime on Friday. The hope is to finally answer at least one of many questions surrounding the disappearance of two young girls, Lyric Cook and Elizabeth Collins.

On Wednesday, an online petition surfaced that criticizes security measures at Meyers Lake and the surrounding bike trails.

"If there were video cameras in that south east corner monitoring we’d know right away what happened," said former Evansdale volunteer fire fighter, Billy Fischels. Fischels says for years he’s considered the bike trails and lake too isolated ... few lights, no video

"If people know or knew there’s video surveillance going on, they’re a lot less likely to commit any crime," he said. Fischels added he also has a young daughter and his heart breaks for the families involved in this terrible ordeal. Fischels is now petitioning the city to consider adding cameras to areas around the lake. He needs 5,000 signatures and has started gathering support online.

Neighbors said the girl’s disappearance naturally calls into question community safety

As residents anxiously await a resolution at Meyers Lake, law enforcement continues to fend of rumors surrounding the investigation. "We also understand, when something goes on like this especially when we are not able to give you information, people start to interject their own stuff," said Black Hawk County Chief Deputy, Rick Abben. "It's difficult for us to deal with."

Chief Deputy Abben put several rumors to rest at a press conference Wednesday. He says the landfill is being checked but nothing of value to the investigation has been discovered there.

He also mentioned the family and the FBI continue to be resources to the investigation and have remained cooperative throughout this difficult time.
