People who lived in Dubuque in the last decade might get some money back now that the city council agreed to settle a franchise fee lawsuit.
The city accidentally charged gas and electric customers an extra tax for those services but did not know the tax was illegal.
Last year, a group filed a lawsuit against the city in hopes of getting a refund.
Dubuque city leaders say the $2.6 million settlement cost the city much less than if it went to court and lost.
Leaders say they are now brainstorming ideas of how to re-coop that $2.6 million. A judge needs to approve the settlement before any refunds could start.
