When does fall actually start?

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- Only 9 days until astronomical fall begins.

Wait a minute! Fall starts on September 1st right?

Well, that’s right and wrong.

Here’s why.

There is meteorological fall and astronomical fall. So, what’s the difference?

Meteorological fall is focused on months, starting September first and runs through November.

As for astronomical fall, it’s a bit more complicated. Autumnal equinox is the technical terminology for this upcoming season. So what’s it mean? During the time of equinox the sun shines directly on the equator and the length of day and night are nearly equal. For eastern Iowa we’ll experience the equinox on September 22, 2017 at roughly 3 PM CDT.
