This is a classic setup for extreme cold in the upper Midwest. Whenever you see a massive ridge of high pressure sitting up in southwestern Canada, it has no choice but to move southeast toward us in the coming days.
Friday’s snow only enhances the cold even more.
Under that high pressure system is by far the coldest air of the season so far. Arctic high pressure systems such as one like this will tend to drop temperatures into the -10s and -20s at night and keep us below zero for daytime highs.
They take forever to leave, too. Plan on bitter cold through at least Tuesday morning. Wind chills in some spots will briefly touch -40!
Ensure that you have jumper cables in your car and that your gas tank is full when going out this weekend for any New Year’s celebrations. Make sure your cell phone is fully charged as well.
