CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) - When we think about strong storms, oftentimes the vision of a tornado, very strong wind, or huge hail enters our mind. We don’t often think about torrential rainfall causing worse problems than those other things listed above. It can, though. In fact, flash flooding is the number one killer of all thunderstorm hazards. Most fatalities occur in cars as drivers attempt to drive through floodwater. This is avoidable! Always remember to stay out of flooded areas.
The featured map is courtesy of the Iowa Environmental Mesonet and plots all the flash flood warnings that were issued in 2017. As you can see, plenty of those warnings occurred right here in eastern Iowa.
