Voters get first glimpse of Cedar Rapids mayoral candidates at forum

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) - Voters in Cedar Rapids got their first chance to hear from all eight candidates for mayor on Wednesday.

The forum was at the Scottish Rite Temple put on by the Cedar Rapids Association of Firefighters and the Cedar Rapids Police Bargaining Union.

Each question asked by the attendees took a while because all eight candidates took turns answering every question.

One person asked a question about how the mayor would handle controversial officer involved shootings. Another asked for the candidates' thoughts on the new panhandling ordinance.

One attendee said seeing all eight candidates speak helped narrow it down for them.

"I would encourage anyone who is planning to vote in this election to take an opportunity to come to these forums it really for me separated out the two or three people that I am still interested in possibly voting for," Kathryn Coulter said.

KCRG-TV9 is airing that forum with the candidates Thursday night. The Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance and Hawkeye Labor Council are the sponsors. The event is only for members, though, so the broadcast is the only way you'll be able to see it.

The forum starts at 7 p.m.
