Solar panels set up to help Cedar Rapids water towers

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- Grids of solar panels showing up around Cedar Rapids are helping save money.

New solar panels are helping power water towers in Cedar Rapids.

We checked with the city about the panels in the middle of city-owned fields. A city spokesperson told us the city is installing the panels.

The solar panels are at several sites, including one at Glass Road and Wenig Road Northeast. They are also at water towers Chandler Street Southwest and the one near the Kirkwood Community College campus.

The panels are boosting power for pump stations and water towers. The energy boosts water pressure at those stations.

A city spokesperson says that allows Cedar Rapids to reduce its carbon footprint and save money on energy costs.
