CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) - A Cedar Rapids man is facing charges following a June burglary where a resident shot the burglar with his own weapon.
Police said it happened about 1:30 p.m. On June 21 at 424 Fairway Terrace SE.
Officers found two men with gunshot wounds inside the house. The resident, Ethan Deyo, told officers a suspect had entered his home armed with a handgun and threatened him.
Deyo struggled with the suspect, 43-year-old Sherman Hopkins, and managed to get the handgun away from Hopkins. He told police he fired the gun at Hopkins several times. Deyo also suffered a gunshot wound during the struggle.
Hopkins is facing charges of first degree burglary, 1st degree robbery, and 1st degree kidnapping. Emergency crews took him to a hospital for treatment, Police said he was released Monday and taken to the Linn County Jail.
Responders also took Deyo to the hospital for treatment. There is no word on his condition.
Investigators said they do not think this was a random act. Police continue to investigate the incident.
