CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- What began as no heat in the skywalks of Plaza 425 caused a stem of problems on Monday and Tuesday for some Cedar Rapids businesses.
Bob James, 98.1 KHAK Brand Manager, said the boilers had problems on Monday night going into Tuesday in Plaza 425, where Townsquare Media is located.
Alison Burke, an employee at Prairie Soup Company, said a pipe burst in their restaurant at around 11:30 a.m. on January 2.
Burke said the plumber was able to turn off the water and fix the pipe.
However, when they turned the water back on, it caused another problem for the building.
"We had a nice waterfall above my station," Burke said.
She said when the water was turned back on after the pipe was fixed at about 12:30 p.m., a water sprinkler in the building lobby erupted.
Burke said the workers and customers in Prairie Soup Company evacuated at around 1 p.m.
James said he and some of his coworkers went down to see the damage, as they heard water was spraying from a fire sprinkler system.
That was when they decided to take a video of the waterfall coming from the ceiling.
James said some of the elevators in the building were impacted by the water in the lobby.
Burke said at 2 p.m. she and some other Prairie Soup Company workers were able to come in and access the damage from the water.
Paninis, tea, and deli meat had to be thrown out.
Burke said they haven't yet checked to see if the soup warmers still work, but Prairie Soup Company is open today.
