VINTON, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- The Vinton Police Department's K9 officer Gino now has a bullet and stab resistant vest, according to a news release.

The non-profit group Vested Interest in K9s donated the vest to the department.

The vest is embroidered with the sentiment "in memory of K9 Ty, California City Police Department." K9 Ty died during surgery to treat injuries received when Ty and officers tried to rescue a woman and child held hostage in a home.

K9 Gino will wear the vest during high risk activities such as searches for criminal suspects, according to the news release.
