IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) — The city of Iowa City will not provide crossing guards at two intersections near Horace Mann Elementary this school year because the school is closed for construction.

The city said the intersections are Church Street and Dodge Street, and Church Street and Governor Street. The Iowa City Police Department will have personnel at the intersections during the first few days of the school year to make sure students are not crossing without supervision.

The city said it plans for crossing guards to return to their typical posts when Horace Mann reopens for the 2019-2020 school year.

The district has created neighborhood bus stops that will avoid students crossing at Dodge Street and Governor Street.

You may learn more about the neighborhood stops by calling the district at (319) 688-1187, or visiting the district's website.

An earlier version of this story referred to the Iowa City school district was not providing crossing guards, rather than the city. Crossing guards are city employees. KCRG-TV9 regrets the error.
