New assisted living communities in Marion to accommodate growing number of seniors

MARION, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- The four new assisted living complexes are being welcomed with open arms in Marion - especially by pre-existing senior living communities. Instead of viewing the locations as competitors, Summit Pointe Senior Living Community sees them as an opportunity for a partnership. Summit Pointe's sales and marketing director Sara Kuempel said it's a chance to give seniors options to choose from, such as skilled nursing homes or low income senior apartments.

"All of the communities really do offer something more individualized for that senior so they'll have a lot more choices in this area" said Kuempel.

According to Kuempel, Summit Pointe and other assisted living communities in and around Marion are full and have long wait lists. She said the new complexes will help alleviate those wait lists.

"With all the baby boomers coming, we're going to need more housing for seniors."

"When you have a family that is an immediate need and you have a wait list that might take three or four months to move in, they can't do that" she said.

Marion's Assistant Director for Planning and Development David Hockett said the new complexes will provide lots of jobs.

"These opportunities will offer a great opportunity for those folks looking for work from cooks to the nurses to the consultants that work for these facilities" said Hockett.

He said a couple of the new complexes are already starting to book tenants.

"There's wait lists already I believe on these facilities before they even open."

"The need is growing. The developers are there, they want to do these projects. The state wants to do these projects. They're providing the tax breaks and some of the other incentives to make these projects work" said Hockett.

One of the new assisted living communities, The Arbor, is set to open sometime in the next few months, according to Hockett. It is located in the 1300 block of Blairs Ferry Road near the intersection with Lindale Road. Another complex is expected to open before the end of the year and construction has just begun at the other two locations.
