UPDATE: Multiple-vehicle accident causes another in Clayton County

CLAYTON COUNTY, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- UPDATE: The Clayton County Sheriff’s Office said it unintentionally provided inaccurate information in the press release issued Thursday.

In a corrected press released sent on Friday, the sheriff's office said Hicks and Smith took evasive action to avoid hitting Brown. Hicks’ motorcycle struck Smith’s motorcycle causing him to lose control and strike Koch’s vehicle.


PREVIOUS STORY: Clayton County Deputies were called to an accident on Highway 13/52 near Highway 18 on October 8 at 1:50 p.m.

Kenneth Brown of Cedar Rapids was driving a car Southbound on Highway 13/52 when he attempted to pass a truck driven by Samuel Koch, of Coggon.

Brown hit an oncoming Northbound motorcycle driven by Dawn Hicks of Waverly as he tried to pass Koch.

A motorcycle operated by Timothy Smith of Waverly tried to avoid being hit by Brown’s car, causing him to lose control.

Brown’s car then struck Koch’s truck.

Hicks was transported to the Central Community Hospital by Monona Ambulance to treat the injuries.

Brown was charged with unsafe passing.

Deputies also investigated a second accident that happened after the first accident.

Gary Hamor, of Oelwein, was driving Northbound when he slowed down for the first accident. His car was rear-ended by a car operated by Jonathan Romo of Aplington.

Two passengers in Hamor’s car were taken to Central Community Hospital by the Monona Ambulance for treatment of injuries.

Romo was charged with Failure to maintain control.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Monona Ambulance, the Monona Fire Department and the Iowa State Patrol.
