Mother who drove kids into Cedar River may face charges

Cedar Rapids Police, along with Cedar Rapids Fire and the Johnson County Dive Team, recover a vehicle from the Cedar River on Monday, March 26, 2018.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) - A 35 year-old mother could face criminal charges after driving her car into an icy Cedar River this past March with her two kids inside.

Cedar Rapids police wrapped up its investigation this week and forwarded it to the Linn County Attorney's Office to consider filing possible criminal charges, a police spokesperson confirmed Tuesday.

Cedar Rapids firefighters pulled out the woman and her 12-year-old and 1-year-old sons after their sedan went into the river at the Mohawk boat ramp on March 11. None of the three were hurt but the woman remained in the hospital for several days afterwards.

Divers recovered the car from the river a couple weeks later.
