Cedar Rapids police responded in large numbers to the 1600 block of Bever Avenue Southeast about 7:40 p.m. Saturday.

Police said the suspect shot a 41-year-old woman in her abdomen. She is still in the hospital and is expected to survive.

Police say the suspect is in custody in Illinois on other charges and there is no threat to the public, as it was not a random act.

On Saturday, multiple residents in the area reported hearing at least one gunshot.

"We heard police yell, 'Get down!'' said Athena Anderson, who lives nearby. "But, no idea if they have the suspect or suspects."

Officers were spotted carrying rifles in the area. Another resident said authorities have told them to stay in their homes for safety.
