Jim Swearngin told KCCI his wife and son were on their land in Mahaska County to find driftwood for his son’s taxidermy business when his wife spotted the snake by the river.

Swearngin and his wife both snapped pictures of the snake, which appeared to be eating what Swearngin described is a flathead catfish.

He called the snake, “one of the largest northern water snakes I have seen.”
