Iowa Senate approves more restrictive abortion bill

DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- Lawmakers in the Iowa Senate Tuesday night approved a bill that would further restrict abortions.

Senators approved it by a vote of 32 to 17, mostly along party lines. The bill now goes to the House.

The bill would outlaw most abortions 20 weeks after fertilization, but would allow some abortions later than that, such as in cases of medical emergencies.

Currently, Iowa bans abortions at the end of the second trimester of pregnancy, or 27 weeks.
