IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- The Iowa City Police Department honored the city's police officers and their families today.

The department held a ceremony in observance of National Police Week. Chief Matherly talked about the five Iowa officers who were killed in the line of duty last year. Police chaplains said prayers for the officers safety and for peace of mind for their families. He said national police week also recognizes those who work behind the scenes such as dispatchers and administrative assistants.

"We're thinking of them and we support them. They're part of us. To be honest with you, as chief, they're the most important link for me. Without them we would fail" said Iowa City Police Chief Jody Matherly.

National Police Week runs through Saturday May 20th.
