Epic Rebirth to highlight lingering influence from 2008 Flood

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) - With the Flood of 2008 now a decade past, KCRG-TV9 and the Gazette have released details for Epic Rebirth, an event scheduled for June 13 at Vets Memorial Building in downtown Cedar Rapids. Presented by Mercy Medical Center, this community celebration is free and open to the public.

What was once identified as the low point in the community’s psyche, the Flood became a pivotal driver in the trajectory of Cedar Rapids’ growth. In a unique combination of private investment, collaborative efforts, public incentives, and the proverbial blood, sweat and tears, the greater Cedar Rapids area has catapulted itself to the top of countless “best place” lists.

KCRG-TV9 and the Gazette will take an in-depth look at the past decade. Beginning with that infamous week in June when the Cedar River unleashed its fury, Epic Rebirth tells the complete story of perhaps our city’s most challenging decade. There are two activities:

• Community Showcase: Begins at 4:30 pm. Live music and entertainment, along with community stations to learn about achievements since 2008 and upcoming events and initiatives.

• Live Program on KCRG-TV 9.2 from 6:30 to 8 pm. Hosted by KCRG-TV9’s Bruce Aune and Beth Malicki, the 90-minute live broadcast will feature interview-style segments about the rebuild, system and development milestones, along with performances by local representatives from the arts, culture and entertainment sectors. Segments will include representatives from emergency response, local government, core neighborhoods and more.
