Effigy Mounds to be featured on new quarter

WAUKON, Iowa (KCRG-TV9)-- The Effigy Mounds National Monument in northeast Iowa will soon be appearing on quarters

The U.S. Mint and the National Park Service say the monument will go onto the coins as part of the "America the Beautiful" quarters initiative.

The monument preserves the mounds that are sacred to more than a dozen Native American tribes. The mounds are just north of McGregor along the Mississippi River.

There will be a ceremonial launch of the new quarter on Tuesday, Feb. 7, at 10 a.m. at the Allamakee Community School District High School Gym in Waukon, People will be able to exchange cash for the quarters after the ceremony.

In addition, Kerndt Brothers Bank in Waukon will host an open house coin exchange the same day from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
