LINN COUNTY, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- The Linn County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a motorcycle and passenger vehicle collided, injuring a 23-year-old Cedar Rapids.

In a news release, authorities said it happened Friday morning at about 8:45 in the 7000 block of Ely Road.

“The driver of the striking vehicle, 38 year old Barry G. Randall of Marion IA., had been southbound bound on Ely Road when he did a U turn into oncoming traffic and struck a motorcycle that had been northbound,” said Sgt. Andy Humphrey with the sheriff’s office. “The motorcycle rider was 23 year old Austin L. Schminkey of Cedar Rapids IA.”

Sgt. Humphrey said Schminkey was taken to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for what are believed to be “non-life threatening injuries.”

“Mr. Randall was not injured,” Sgt. Humphrey said. “There were no passengers with either vehicle.”

Sgt. Humphrey pointed out Randall was wearing his seatbelt and said Schminkey was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.

Authorities issued Randall a citation for making an unsafe turn.

The Linn County Sheriff’s Office said it will continue its investigation.
