UPDATE: Firefighters say child playing with lighter caused house fire on B Ave NE

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- The Cedar Rapids Fire Department said a juvenile playing with a lighter caused a fire that damaged a house at 1638 B Avenue NE.

A spokesman said investigators determined the fire started in a bedroom on the main level of the duplex.

Firefighters told TV9 they rescued several dogs from the house, and there were no injuries.

A fire heavily damaged a house at 1638 B Avenue NE Monday night, according to a news release.

Cedar Rapids Firefighters just before 8 p.m. crews responded to a reported fire in the second floor bathroom of the house, which was divided into two units.

Firefighters found moderate smoke on the first and second floor, and fire in the wall and ceiling of the first flood. The fire went up the walls into the attic. Crews cut a hole in the roof of the house to vent smoke.

Firefighters told TV9 they rescued several dogs from the house, and there were no injuries.

The fire displaced the three occupants of the home's two units and the American Red Cross is providing temporary housing.

Fire investigators have not yet determine a cause for the fire.
