On Tuesday, an employee noticed something seemed wrong with a pump at FasMart on Central Avenue. A technician found a skimmer inside the pump.
Dubuque Police Lieutenant Joe Messerich said they aren't sure how long the skimmer could have been inside the pump.
He suggests people should always check a machine before inserting a card. That includes looking for broken security seals, damage around the card reader and even pulling on the card reader to see if a skimmer is covering the reader.
Messerich said, "if you are doing these inspections before you put your card in the machine and you find something that looks out of the ordinary and it doesn't make you feel right don't use the machine. Let the store or company know and then give us a call so we can take a look at it so nobody else falls victim to it."
He said the department is sending the skimmer out for testing to find out how long it was in the pump.
