Community stops historic opera house from closing its doors

COGGON, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- Our Town Coggon brought back its history and now is home to one of the only operating Opera Houses in the state.

The Opera House was built in 1915, and then was a movie theater.
But after that closed in the early 80's, it was almost lost forever.

People formed the Old Opera House Community Arts Council to raise money and save the building.

Now it is an active entertainment venue that brings in acts from Branson and beyond.

"Parking's easy and tickets aren't high priced and plenty of places to sit," Dick Isaacson, Old Opera House Community Arts Council said.

Many communities were closing down small town opera houses and theatres in the 80s and 90s.

But, the Coggon community decided they would bring it back.
