CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- Coe College will show off its new gym and athletic facility Friday afternoon during homecoming weekend.
The project began back in 2015 and now Coe College is prepared to unveil the brand new athletic facilities to alumni and the public.
They have added 200,000 square feet of new and renovated athletic facilities, including a 1,600 seat arena and new fitness centers for athletes and students. Also included is a new wrestling room, the largest of its kind out of all NCAA Division-III schools.
As Secretary of the College Rod Pritchard explained, these new athletic facilities will now provide an excellent opportunity to stretch their arm of recruiting a little further for all of Coe's teams.
"We are in NCAA Division 3 in one of the most competitive conferences in the country and we've seen many new facilities in Iowa and the Midwest among colleges and universities like Coe," said Pritchard. "To remain competitive in the marketplace we really needed these kinds of facilities to keep attracting student athletes."
This was a 21 million dollar project that was funded primarily by donations. The price tag was the largest capital project in Coe College history.
As President Dave McInally, it was an investment for the college that goes far beyond the campus, encouraging students from all over to join the Cedar Rapids community.
"It's a time of growth for Coe, it's a time of growth for Cedar Rapids," said McInally. "So we feel as if this building is an investment not only in our campus but in the whole community and we want to be a part of that progress. And I'd say the most important reason is it's helped us increase our enrollment and bring more people to our community."
School officials say more than 90% of students participate in intramural sports, in addition to the 500 Division-III varsity athletes on campus.
The dedication is October 13 at 4:30 p.m. and an open house will be from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, October 14.
