CORALVILLE, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) - Coralville broke ground on the city's $190 million arena project Wednesday.

People representing the University of Iowa, Johnson County, Coralville, and Iowa City, along with Herky the Hawk, and Iowa Athletics Director Gary Barta all dug into the site in the Iowa River Landing area.

Barta announced that starting in 2020, the Hawkeyes volleyball team will play home games in the arena. He said there might be other Iowa sporting events there too.

The mayor of Coralville says he hope it becomes a destination in the area.

"It's just the crowning gem on top of the already successful Iowa River Landing development, but actually it goes much beyond just Coralville. It will be a great addition to the entire region," John Lundell said.

They hope to open the arena in two years.
