Mystery photo found in piano

NEW CASTLE, Colo. (KKCO) -- One man's trash has become another family’s treasure.

But they got more than they bargained for and want to return some. A New Castle, Colo. family has found a photo inside a piano, and wants to find out who the mystery people are.

"You never know, it could be the only photo of its kind," said Leaanna Shaffer, a New Castle resident.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words.

"I don't know if it's a wedding picture because it kind of looks like it a little bit," said Shaffer. “I would kind of like to get the backstory on it."

The piano started out as a gift for Shaffer’s son with autism.

“He showed some interest in playing the piano," she said.

After Shaffer started cleaning the piano, she came across a picture frame.

"It has doors in the bottom, so I opened those up," said Shaffer. "That's actually where I had found the picture."

Shaffer got the piano from a man in Glenwood Springs, Colo.

"The first thing I thought of was, these guys must have accidentally lost their family photo into it," said Shaffer.

When she asked about the perfectly intact photo of a man in uniform seemingly standing next to his bride, the previous owner knew nothing.

"He was like, we've never seen that," said Shaffer.

Now that she has hit a dead end, Shaffer is turning to the power of social media, hoping someone, somewhere will recognize it.

"Was it their wedding day? Where were they going? Who they are?" said Shaffer.

For now, the family will hold on to it until it finds its true home.

“Somebody out there might want this back, if it’s of a family member, anything like that. It might have some sentimental value,” said Shaffer.

There are some clues about the photo. The man is in uniform, it looks like a wedding photo and they think it could be from around the 70s or 80s. Shaffer has tried contacting the military, but there isn’t a way to track down the man.

The piano does have a serial number on it, which they hope will lead them to some more clues.
