John grew up in Oskaloosa where he played a lot of football and a little basketball and track.

He graduated from DePauw University In Greencastle, Indiana and took a year of radio-TV graduate school at Indiana. Then, it was off to the real world.

John started at WBAY-TV in Green Bay in June of 1970. He was a news reporter and photographer for two years. Then he got his first big break. It was a chance to join the WBAY-TV sports department. Eight months later, he was named the sports director and remained in that position until June of 1979 when he accepted the position of sports director at KCRG-TV9.

Besides covering football, basketball and baseball, John loves covering stories in the great outdoors.

John has ridden and reported on RAGBRAI nine different years and he was recently named Iowa Sportscaster of the year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.

John and his wife Mary have two grown children, but are kept busy at home with Strider, a golden retriever and Morgan, a big old cat who rules the roost.
