Eastern Iowa JDRF - One Walk
May 14, 2016
NewBo City Market/NewBo Neighborhood
JDRF One Walk has a single goal: creating a world without type 1 diabetes (T1D). We hope you'll join us this year as we walk and raise money for life-changing research for the millions affected by this devastating disease.
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that strikes children and adults suddenly. It has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. If you have T1D, your pancreas stops producing insulin—a hormone essential to turning food into energy. This means you must constantly monitor your blood-sugar level, inject or infuse insulin from a pump and carefully monitor your eating and activity every single day.
There is nothing you can do to prevent T1D. And—currently—there is no cure. But there is something you can do to help.
When you join one of the hundreds of JDRF One Walks across the country, the money you raise will support JDRF—the leading global organization funding T1D research. And, you'll have a great time doing it! That's because you'll walk with a committed community that is passionate about doing whatever it takes to help JDRF turn Type One into Type None.
We can't do it without you. Please register today at walk.jdrf.org.

HD Youth Center and Salvation Army - School Supply Drive
May 31, 2016
The Salvation Army teams up with other non-profits to help distribute school supplies to area schools for their students who need help. This partnership is in its fourth year and this year, The Salvation Army, Henry Davison Youth Center, Hiawatha Parks & Recreation and Freedom Festival are working together on this project. In previous years, backpacks filled with supplies had been distributed to individuals in the community. After deliberation between the organizations and talks with the school district, it was decided that going through the schools would be a better way to get more specific items into the hands of the students. Currently, the group is in the process of raising the funds to purchase the school supplies. In 2015, the group distributed 2,058 backpacks and numerous other supplies. The anticipated financial need for 2016 is $35,000. We are hoping to have the funds raised by May/June in order to determine which item can be purchased and get them to the area schools.
