KCRG and our Show You Care Sponsors are very proud to present Curbing Crime.
For many years eastern Iowa has prided itself on the low crime rates in our communities. But this year, neighbors from Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Waterloo and Dubuque have called our newsroom, concerned about the violent behavior on their streets.
The community in Cedar Rapids poured its support into the Police Department after someone attacked one of its officers. Officer Tim Davis is still recovering after suffering a serious head injury from that assault in March. It happened when his partner and he were responding to a report of a robbery near First Avenue Northeast.
Different organizations and people have hosted a number of fundraising events for Officer Davis and his family. Police say the assault has helped to strengthen the community and the department.
While numbers show violent crime - homicide, assault, robbery - is down in Cedar Rapids so far this year, overall arrests are up considerably.
Our special focuses on the root of the issue and what communities are doing to curb crime.
KCRG-TV9 is committed to supporting eastern Iowans' effort to end violence. Thank you for watching our Show You Care Special.
