CEDAR RAPIDS - The American Diabetes Association tells us that Diabetes is quietly invading Eastern Iowa.

198,000 Iowans have the disease and thousands more are at high risk. Diabetes is the fifth leading cause of death among Iowans.

The KCRG-TV9 Show You care Special, “Iowa’s Battle with Diabetes,” gave our viewers a glimpse into why our state is struggling to keep up with the Diabetes Epidemic.

Medical experts say there's a big difference between Type I and Type II Diabetes. Here's how to tell the difference:

Type I Diabetes:
- also known as Juvenile Diabetes
- is NOT preventable
- People with Type I need insulin because their bodies no longer produce it.

Type II Diabetes:
- IS preventable
- poor diet and lack of exercise contribute to this type
- no warning signs or symptoms
- Type II Diabetes gradually takes over the body as it becomes resistant to insulin.
