NEAR INDEPENDENCE, Iowa — Investigators need help finding whoever damaged the former Buchanan County Home.

The sheriff’s office said sometime before Tuesday, vandals broke windows, doors, toilets and mirrors. They also spray painted and destroyed furniture.

The about 100-year-old building typically sits empty, but the current owner has plans for the property.

Family said he wants to turn the facility in to some sort of community center.

The owner’s nephew, Josh Hopkins, said it hurts to see the damage.

“I mean, you build a connection with a building like this. Then to see people come in and destroy it, the anger starts to build,” Hopkins said.

Anyone with information about this vandalism can call the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office at 319-334-2568.
