IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Iowa football team leads Northern Iowa, 17-13, at halftime in Kinnick Stadium. But it hasn't been entirely pretty for the Hawkeyes.

Junior quarterback Jake Rudock has completed 19 of 25 passes, but the majority of those completions were short throws or check-downs. Rudock's conservative play drew criticism from former Iowa star receiver Marvin McNutt on Twitter.

The Hawkeyes jumped out to a fast start, when Mark Weisman returned the opening kickoff 50 yards. Three plays later, running back LeShun Daniel scored his first career touchdown on a 13-yard blast that put Iowa up 7-0.

But a few big plays by Panther running back David Johnson -- who caught two passes for 113 yards in the first half -- helped UNI rally to take a 10-7 lead in the second quarter. Iowa responded with a well-executed 17-play, 79-yard drive that culminated in a Weisman touchdown plunge from the 1-yard line.

Iowa took advantage of several ugly Panther penalties. A holding flag wiped out a UNI touchdown in the first quarter, and the Panthers had to settle for a field goal. A roughing the passer penalty in the red zone negated a third-down incompletion by Iowa, setting up Weisman's touchdown run. In all, the Panthers committed nine first half penalties.

Iowa has given carries to five players in the first half, led by Weisman with six and Daniels and Jordan Canzeri with four each.
