Animal Control: Geese Being Hit with Blow Darts

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Authorities think someone is shooting geese with a blowgun in Cedar Rapids. They call it a crime and want it to stop.

Since last year, animal control has received multiple reports of Canadian Geese near Robbins Lake with blow dart head wounds.

Officials aren’t sure if there are many birds with the wounds, or just one.

Rod Irons, an animal control officer, said he has tried a few times to catch one of the reported geese, hoping to help it. So far Irons hasn’t had any luck.

“It’s extremely difficult to get anywhere near it,” said Irons. “And at this point, if it is the same one from last year, it knows us now and it leaves as soon as we pull up,”

While blowguns are legal in Iowa, shooting a goose with one at Robbins Lake is not. Irons said animal control officers will cite the culprit for animal abuse if he or she is found.
