Air Force Honor Guard Drill Team To Perform at Kernels Game

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Fans coming to the Cedar Rapids Kernels game on Thursday evening will get a “bonus” military performance not often seen in Iowa.

The U.S. Air Force Honor Guard Drill Team from Washington, D.C. will do a pregame performance starting around 6:00 p.m. The 12-member team performs a series of close-order drills with World War II-era M1 rifles. Those rifles come equipped with bayonets so a slip of the wrist while tossing or twirling comes with more than the normal degree of risk.

MSgt Scott Slindee said each service has a demonstration drill team. The one from the Air Force is the most recent winner of the competition between services.

Members performed in Davenport on Wednesday and go on to Omaha for an air show after the demonstration Thursday night in Cedar Rapids.
