DES MOINES, Iowa - The winner of the Iowa/Iowa State game will take home a trophy with a much different look this year.
Today at the Iowa State Fair the Iowa Corn Growers Association unveiled the new Cy-Hawk football trophy. The trophy shows an Iowa family together after a day on the farm.
"This is literally a work of art representing the people and characteristics that are uniquely Iowan." said Craig Floss, CEO for Iowa Corn. "Just as the trophy reads, we are honest, hard working, family and community orientated people. Iowa's corn farmers are proud to bring this work of art to the new Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series football game and we look forward to sharing it with the people of Iowa."
The Corn Growers Association said in a press release that the trophy represents Iowans as caring, trustworthy, committed, and compassionate, stewards, mentors and educators. These are some of the many characteristics of all citizens of the state of Iowa and are embodied in the iconic image that rests atop the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series football trophy. The image also salutes the rich tradition and significant role that agriculture has in the history and the future of our great state.
"The scene of a family talking after a day's work is representative of our state," said Iowa State Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard. "It certainly symbolizes one of our state's best virtues ... its family-oriented people. We are grateful for the support of the Iowa Corn Growers for the Cy-Hawk Series and look forward to a great partnership. I am confident the Cyclones will be anxious to compete for this football trophy every fall."
The new football trophy is part of an expanded partnership between the Iowa Corn Growers Association and The Iowa Corn Promotion Board (Iowa Corn) and Learfield Sports on behalf of both the Iowa State University and University of Iowa Athletic Departments.
There will be separate trophies for women's and men's basketball and the overall series winner.
